Hair transplants before and after results

FAQs

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure which aims to restore hair growth to areas of the body (most commonly the scalp or eyebrows) with limited or no growth.

The surgeon moves grafts, or small pieces of skin, from a part of the body where there is high hair density (the donor area) to an area with thin, balding or no hair (the recipient area).

The most common methods for hair follicle transplant surgery are the FUE and DHI techniques.

The surgeon removes healthy, individual hair follicles from the donor area (often the back of the head where the hair tends to be thicker) and transplants them into the recipient area (i.e. the area with limited or no hair).

The extracted follicles will then promote hair growth on the new area.

A hair transplant involves the following key steps:

  • Donor & Recipient Area Marking: Your surgeon will mark the donor area(s) and draw out your new hairline (the recipient area).
  • Anaesthesia: Your surgeon will apply local anaesthetic to both the donor area and recipient area. As a result, you won’t feel either the harvesting or the implantation.
  • Harvesting / Extraction: Depending on the method used, your surgeon may shave the area on your head that’s being harvested. This provides them a clearer view of the hair follicles. They will then remove individual hair follicles from the donor area (usually the back of your head) and place them into a nutrient-rich solution.
  • Implantation: Your surgeon will carefully determine the direction of hair growth and the spacing between each follicle, forming the channels for the hair grafts to be transplanted into. They will then carefully implant each hair follicle into your skin, following the natural direction of growth. This process takes several hours, as each follicle must be carefully implanted at the correct angle, to achieve a natural-looking result.

 

Following your procedure, we will check on the implanted grafts, as well as any bleeding or swelling.

We will advise you on how to care for your head and how best to sleep. We will also provide a comprehensive aftercare plan and medication.

After the surgery, your scalp may be very tender and you may need to take pain medication for several days. You will be required to wear bandages over your scalp for at least a day or two.

You will have a follow-up in-person appointment the next day to check the healing process. You will also have phone access to nurses in the UK and Australia.

Hair transplant recovery time is generally 2 to 5 days after the procedure – at which point you can return to work. However, healing can take up to 10 days.

Your transplanted hair will fall out within two to three weeks of your surgery, which is completely normal. This allows for new hair growth.

Most people will experience 60% of new hair growth after 6 to 9 months.

The most common hair transplant side effect is scarring. However, the incisions are so tiny and will be covered with new hair growth, that any scarring will barely be visible.

Other potential side effects include:

• scalp pain, itching, and swelling

• inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis)

• bleeding

• infections

• crust or pus drainage around the surgical sites

• loss of sensation around the surgical sites

In most cases, hair transplants are permanent and will last for the rest of your life.

Once the healing process is complete, the new roots start sprouting hair naturally and will continue to do so.

However, in some cases, the new hair follicles may gradually (usually after several years) start producing less hair than they did initially, so additional ‘touch up’ surgery may be required.

Hair transplant pricing can vary greatly, according to the number of grafts required. However, at Asthetica our costs remain extremely competitive – no matter your requirements.

Many companies charge per the number of grafts that you require, which can ultimately lead to their services becoming expensive.
