About the procedure

A breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery to make the breasts smaller by removing fat, breast tissue and skin and reshaping them.

Who is a good candidate for a breast reduction?

Women’s breast size can be determined by genetics, body weight and hormones and can become a problem for some females in adolescence or middle age during or after menopause.

Large or excessively large breasts (macromastia) can cause backache, neck pain, rashes under the breasts, create grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, poor posture and a feeling of self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery can remove or reduce the impact of these problems and creates breasts that are more proportional to your body shape. A breast reduction can also improve the fit and comfort of clothing and make exercise less cumbersome.

While breast reduction surgery is most common for women, male breast reduction is becoming more popular.

What are the benefits of a breast reduction?

  • Alleviate back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Improved posture
  • Creates a well-proportioned body silhouette
  • Reduced skin irritation and rashes
  • Better clothing fit
  • Makes physical activity easier
  • Improved sleep and body confidence
  • Includes a breast lift

We offer breast implants combined with breast lift surgery if you would like fuller, lifted breasts. You can find out more about breast implants here, or simply book a free call with our friendly team wh can answer any questions you may have.

FAQs

A reduction mammoplasty, or breast reduction, is a breast reduction where excess skin, tissue and fat are removed and the nipple and areolae are lifted to a higher position. Areolae are often reduced so they are more proportional to the new breast size. A breast lift is also incorporated to create a perkier appearance.

  • Have a healthy diet and take regular exercise
  • Be as close to your ideal weight as possible and keep your weight steady
  • If you smoke, stop at least six weeks before the operation to reduce the risk of wound healing problems
  • Stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory and non-prescription medication a week before your surgery in consultation with your GP.
  • If you wish, you can take photographs of your breasts for your medical record

A breast reduction usually includes reducing the breast horizontally (lifting upwards) and vertically (narrowing a wide breast). The incisions will be vertical, horizontal and around the nipple to reposition it. The surgeon removes fat, mammary gland tissue, and excess skin to create smaller breasts with less weight. The skin and tissue that is left is reshaped into a smaller, higher breast and the nipple is put back in place.
The scars are around the nipple, vertical from the areolae to the under the breast and in the crease under the breast. Scars should not be visible when you wear normal clothing, bras and bikini tops.

If heavy breasts are giving you discomfort, make sure you are wearing a professionally fitted bra that provides proper support. Other alternatives include changing your lifestyle, such as losing weight, although this may not have a significant effect on the size of your breasts.

You can book a free call with our friendly team who can talk you through the breast reduction surgery process and answer any questions you may have at this initial stage.

You don’t need to have a particular breast size to be eligible for a reduction. If the size of your breasts affects your everyday life, then breast reduction surgery may be a good option for you. You can contact our friendly Asthetica team and we will be able to answer any questions you may have.

A breast reduction is permanent, although breast size can fluctuate with weight gain, weight loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Your breasts will be covered with dressings and there may be tubes under your arms to drain any excess fluid. You may experience some pain immediately after your surgery, including numbness, and you will likely be given medication to reduce pain and infection.  Swelling and bruising are quite normal after the surgery. The surgeon may recommend a compression bra to protect your breasts – this will be discussed with you. The removal of your stitches will be discussed with you in your follow-up consultation.

You should also note:

  • Light activity can resume after 2 weeks
  • Normal exercise can resume after six weeks
  • Avoid sexual activity for two weeks
  • Avoid underwire bras for 3 months after surgery

Yes as scars form at the incision site. However, scars shouldn’t be clearly visible when you wear normal clothing, including a bra, once fully recovered.

Breast reduction surgery is a relatively safe procedure but has risks and complications, like with any surgery.  You may have temporary pain and bruising in the breasts, as well as scarring which should fade over time. For more information about the risks of breast reduction surgery, please see our other FAQs.

There are several methods to reduce scarring after breast reduction surgery:

  • Use surgical tape for a couple of weeks to keep the skin closed.
  • Silicone sheets over the incision area can keep scars hydrated and soft. The sheets are breathable and help prevent bacteria and irritation.
  • Gently massage the area with scar gel or a silicone oil-based cream to help to flatten the scarring. Only do this once the scab or incision has healed. Daily use is recommended for several months to achieve results.
  • Wear a supportive bra 24/7 for 6 weeks.  This is essential when recovering from breast reduction surgery. Make sure it is not underwired.

Breast reduction surgery cost varies from country to country. Breast reduction surgery cost in UK is approximately £6000 while breast reduction surgery cost in Australia is around $12,000. With Asthetica, you can access world-class surgeons to undertake your breast reduction surgery in Turkey for a fraction of the cost. There are breast reduction surgery risks, just like any other surgery. These can include:

  • Temporary bruising
  • Scarring
  • Loss of sensation in the nipples and areolae
  • Difficulty breastfeeding
  • Asymmetrical breasts which could lead to corrective surgery being needed

That's why we only use leading surgeons in their field, world-class hospitals and medical facilities and ensure you have end-to-end support and medical assistance, including access to UK and Australian registered nurses on your return home.

A breast lift and reduction is a combined procedure. A breast lift does not change the size of your breasts while a breast reduction does not necessarily change the shape and lift of your breasts. The cost of a breast lift and reduction surgery in UK is around £10,000.

Our Asthetica surgeons can perform a breast lift and reduction for you in one surgery and the price will be packaged with your accommodation, flights and aftercare to make sure you get the very best value. Generally, our pricing is between 30% to 70% less than in the UK, Canada or Australia - there are no hidden costs. We have spent years sourcing world-class surgeons at a fraction of the cost, while maintaining premium medical and healthcare. We can discuss this with you in further detail in a free phone consultation.
