About the procedure

A breast lift, also known as a breast uplift or mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery to remove excess skin and reshape your breasts, giving you a fuller-looking and more uplifted appearance.

Why get a breast lift?

Breast lift surgery can give you a perky, fuller bosom which is a great way to boost self-esteem and allow you to regain your body confidence.

Sagging or droopy breasts, known as ptosis, are caused by the relaxation of ligaments. A common legacy of pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast droopiness is the result of distension in the breasts where the skin stretches and then shrinks. This change means that unsupported breasts settle into the stretched skin and then gravity takes its toll. This stretching and shrinking are also common with ageing, weight gain and loss.

What does a breast lift do?

Having a breast lift can make the breasts firmer and higher. While not possible to recreate the fibrous support of the breasts, they can be remodelled to suit your current body shape. With breast lift surgery, the nipples can also be moved to the best position on your breast or the areola (the darker skin around the nipple) can be reduced to be more symmetrical with the new breast shape.

What are the advantages of having a breast lift?

  • Improve breast shape – if your breasts are saggy or you are unhappy with the breast shape or skin around the breast, a breast uplift will correct this imperfection.
  • Improve breast volume and tone – if your breasts look ‘empty’ and without shape, a breast lift can improve the volume by removing excess skin and reshaping the breast.
  • Improve areola and nipple position – stretched skin, large areolas and nipples that point downwards are common reasons for patients wanting a breast uplift surgery.

Sometimes patients want more than lifting and reshaping the breast to achieve the look they want. It’s very common for a breast lift procedure to be carried out with a breast augmentation (breast implant surgery) at the same time.

FAQs

Known as mastopexy surgery, a breast lift is a procedure that raises and firms the breasts.

The procedure involves the removal of excess skin to tighten the surrounding tissue and the surgeon then reshapes the breast and breast tissue to have a more attractive contour.

The best breast lift results are in women with small, saggy breasts. While breasts of any size can have an uplift, the results may not last as long for women with large, heavy breasts. Our cosmetic specialists will assess your condition and general health and then advise on the best treatment suitable for you.

A good candidate for a breast lift surgery includes people who are:

·       In good physical health

·       Have fully developed breasts (please note our surgeons do not perform procedures on people under the age of 18)

·       Have droopy or sagging breasts that have lost their firmness

·       Have flatter, longer breasts that have lost their shape

·       Have nipples that fall below the breast crease (when not wearing a bra)

·       Have stretched skin with nipples that are angled downwards

·       Have one breast that sits lower than the other breast.

Breast uplift is a highly individualised procedure and doesn’t necessarily suit everybody. Here are a few things to know prior to having the surgery:

·       It doesn’t significantly change the size of your breasts. If you would like larger breasts, you may want to consider a breast augmentation or alternately, a breast reduction for smaller breasts.

·       Women with large, heavy breasts may not experience long-lasting results.

·       The size and shape of your breasts will influence the type of breast lift most suitable for you as well as the outcome.

·       You should wait at least six to twelve months after you have finished breastfeeding prior to having a breast lift surgery.

·       If you intend to have another child, it’s advised to wait until you have completed your family before opting for breast lift surgery to ensure you have optimal and longer-lasting results.

While breast lifts do not generally interfere with breastfeeding, pregnancy and nursing change the shape of breasts due to the respective stretching and shrinking process. At Asthetica, our surgeons recommend waiting for around twelve months after you have finished breastfeeding to ensure the breast has settled back to its normal shape.

Without surgery, there aren’t many alternatives to lifting the breasts, other than using a padded bra.

Other breast surgeries include a breast augmentation, also known as a boob job or breast implants; and a breast reduction, known as a reduction mammaplasty.

Scarring depends on the type of uplift surgery you have. Regardless of the type of breast uplift you choose, scars shouldn’t be clearly visible when you wear normal clothing, including a bra, once fully recovered

Your breasts will be covered with gauze and a surgical support bra. There may be small tubes at the incision sites to drain any excess fluid or blood.

Drainage tubes are typically removed within a few days. When our surgeon removes the tubes, they will also change or remove your bandages.

You will sore and swollen for around two weeks and will need to wear the support bra (with no underwire) for 23 hours per day for around 3 – 6 weeks. It’s quite common to feel pain around the incision site which will be red and raised for a few months. You may also feel numbness in your nipples and areolae which may last for around 6 weeks.

In the first few days after your surgery, take pain medication as provided or recommend by our medical team.

  • Avoid bending and lifting objects.
  • Sleep on your back or your side.
  • Avoid sex for at least two weeks.
  • Wear the surgical support bra 24/7 for four days after the procedure, or as advised by the surgeon. Then you'll wear a soft support bra for four weeks.
  • Do not expose the area to sun and heat
  • Avoid alcohol for a week
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 6 weeks

Our doctors will advise when it's suitable to resume daily activities and exercise.

Some stitches will need to be removed, some will dissolve on their own. Our medical team will discuss this with you.

A breast lift makes boobs appear perky and lifted, while a breast augmentation increases the size of the breast by using implants.

If you are thinking of getting a breast lift, we recommend waiting for 6 to 12 months after you have finished breastfeeding. This is to allow sufficient time for the breasts to settle back into shape and ensure optimal results from the surgery.

In most cases, a breast lift should last for 10 years or so but results vary from person to person. The size and shape of the breast prior to surgery, ageing, weight gain or loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding are factors that can impact the longevity of your breast lift results.

Like any surgery, results don’t last forever. Skin stretches as we age and so it’s natural that breasts will begin to sag over time.

You may find that mastopexy surgery (breast lift surgery) can reduce the size of your breasts. On average, a decrease by one bra cup size.
