A micro FUE transplant is a surgical procedure during which healthy hair follicles are removed from an area of the body with high hair density (the donor area) and implanted into an area with thin, balding or no hair (the recipient area).

Unlike the more invasive surgeries (such as the FUT / FUG / FUSS techniques, where the hair follicles are extracted by a strip method), with FUE hair treatment, the grafts are removed and implanted manually as individual follicular units.

The FUE technique works by transplanting each hair follicle (or graft) individually.

With Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), hair is harvested through microscopic circular incisions on the donor area, then transplanted back into the scalp through a series of small incisions.

FUE hair transplant surgery involves the following key steps:

• Donor & Recipient Area Marking: Your surgeon will mark the donor area(s) and draw out your new hairline (the recipient area).
• Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is applied to both the donor area and recipient area, meaning you will feel neither the harvesting nor the implantation.
• Harvesting / Extraction: Your surgeon will first loosen the healthy hair roots in the donor area. Microneedles are used to help prevent damage to the hair follicle and to allow for extraction without affecting the surrounding hairs. Your surgeon will extract the hair follicles (grafts) individually from the donor area (usually the back of your head where the hair tends to be thickest). The hair follicles are removed with the highest level of precision, though in a random fashion, allowing your surgeon to harvest hair from the donor area with less noticeable thinning of the area.

Following extraction, the follicular units are placed in a nutrient-rich solution that ensures their vitality.

• Implantation: Implantation is completed via a range of miniscule incisions. The depth of incision matches the length of the follicular unit, thus preventing lesions to the blood vessels in the recipient area.

Your FUE hair transplant doctor will take great care to insert each hair at an angle that matches the natural hair growth of the area – and at a volume and density similar to your existing hair.

When the follicles are transplanted, they attach to the cells around them and are nourished by regular blood flow, just as they were before being removed.

The recovery process after FUE surgery is relatively straight-forward.

After the surgery, your scalp will be quite tender and you will be wearing bandages on your scalp for about a day. However, you should be able to return to work between 2 and 5 days post-surgery.

2 to 3 weeks after your procedure, your transplanted hair will fall out through shock. Although the hairs will have gone, the follicles will remain and will start to regrow properly.

You will receive a comprehensive aftercare plan and any required medication. In addition to the clinic staff, you will also have phone access to UK and Australian registered nurses.

As the implant incisions are so tiny, there is no permanent scarring. Temporary scarring is possible, however it is barely visible and generally disappears within 5 days.

Potential side effects include:

• scalp pain, itching, and swelling
• inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis)
• bleeding
• infections
• crust or pus drainage around the surgical sites
• loss of sensation around the surgical sites

You will see some of your hair shed within a few weeks of surgery. After this initial shedding phase, your roots will begin to grow new hair.

As a general rule, it takes between 3 and 4 months for you to see new growth, and up to 6 to 9 months for you to have about 80% hair growth.
